In Bondurant, Iowa, a worn builder-grade deck had long been a source of frustration for the homeowners. The relentless Southern exposure caused the deck to heat up quickly, making it difficult to enjoy during the hot summer months. After years of enduring the discomfort, they decided it was time for a change – a larger, cooler space that would allow them to enjoy the outdoors in comfort without the constant hassle of maintenance.
Deck & Drive Solutions was brought in to design a solution that would withstand the harsh conditions while offering both practicality and style. The challenge was clear: find materials that could withstand the heat while maintaining a comfortable deck surface. A lighter color scheme was selected to reduce heat absorption, and a pergola was added to provide much-needed shade.
The process began with removing the outdated deck and installing Timbertech PVC Capped Composite Decking in Reserve Series – Chestnut for the main deck surface. The combination of Chestnut with Dark Roast accents for the fascia and risers gave the deck a rich, dimensional look that complemented the home’s design. Above, a Sand composite pergola was installed, providing a consistent color match to the home’s trim while offering protection from the sun’s harsh rays. Westbury Tuscany Series black aluminum railings were selected for their clean lines and durability, completing the modern aesthetic.
The result is a functional outdoor space that stays cooler under the sun, providing an area for relaxation and outdoor enjoyment. The homeowners now have a deck that requires minimal upkeep, complemented by a shaded pergola that offers comfort and an attractive visual element. The space is a well-executed blend of design and engineering, offering long-lasting value and functionality for everyday use.
